Your Health Data, Under Your Control

A collaborative project between the Gurriny Yealamucka Health Services Aboriginal Corporation, the Yarrabah Leadership Forum, and the Software Innovation Institute of the Australian National University.

Call To Action

We are currently seeking potential GYHSAC patients to join our trial of the GYHSAC Patient app and the concept of storing your data securely in a Solid Pod. Trial participants will receive a smartphone with an initial data package to support the trial. Our current trial in 2024 seeks your input into the development of this software and your views on how we can better provide culturally safe care to you. To check your eligibility and to register for the trial, all you have to do is contact us via phone or email, or you can meet us in-person at the Gurriny Clinic (working hours only).

About the Project

Yarrabah Counts!, lead by the Gurriny Yealamucka Health Services Aboriginal Corporation (GYHSAC) in Yarrabah, Far North Queensland, in collaboration with the Yarrabah Leadership Forum (YLF), supported by the Software Innovation Institute (SII) at the Australian National University (ANU), has delivered a first-of-a-kind digital health platform to support integrated health care of patients with diabetes. Using Solid Pod technologies individual patients retain the ownership of their own health data, making their own health data available to them and under their own control.

Patients see many benefits including:

  • Better communications between the patient and the health clinic to maintain and improve health outcomes;
  • Have full control over their own sensitive health data with better privacy and security;
  • Encourage traditional food and medicine for better health outcomes.

We have trialled the developed software with a small group of Indigenous patients in Yarrabah. Patients who participate in the trial will get a free mobile phone with a data package to the value of $50, and pre-installed software.

If you are interested in being part of the trial, please click the button ‘contact us’ (below) to find out more information.

Anyone can install the GYHSAC Patient app on their own Android device by downloading the app file yourself. You can also preview the app on your browser at indi.yarrabah.net. To populate your Solid Pod with data from the Gurriny clinic you will first need to contact the clinic and provide your consent to participate.

Want to know more about Solid Pods and the Project?

Here are a few frequenty asked questions about Solid Pods, the technology behind it, and our pilot project. The following is only a very high level perspective. If you wish to learn more about Solid Pods please take a look at the Solid Project Website

  • 1 What is Solid?

    Solid (SOcial LInked Data) is a specification that lets individuals and groups store their data securely in decentralised data stores called Pods (Personal Online DataStores). Solid Pods are like secure data vaults where you can store data used by different apps. When data is stored in a Solid Pod, its owners control who else and what other applications can access it.

  • We collect three types of data for the pilot project: (1) existing diabetes releated health data of a patient is provided by the Gurriny clinic; (2) basic day-to-day health information such as food intake, blood glucose checks, BMI, and smoking status, can be collected by the participant; and (3) personal information such as emergency contact, address, and medicare number, or even a nominee who can support you in using the app.

  • Your data is stored within your Pod on a Solid server in the cloud. The default server is located within an Australian data centre. All of your health data is encrypted using state-of-the-art standards. This means that even if the server is compromised, no one can access your data without your security key. Not even the computer administrators can access your data. But this means that it is very important that you don't lose your security key because then no one, not even you, can unlock the data you have in your Solid Pod.

  • Currently, we are developing three prototype Solid Pod based health applications: GYHSAC Patient, GYHSAC Clinic, and GYHSAC Health Worker. These apps target different users of the data. The GYHSAC Patient app is for individuals who are patients at GYHSAC. The GYHSAC Clinic app supports the clini in monitoring and improving the health outcomes for the community. The GYHSAC Health Worker app supports our clinic health professionals in their support of patients, to securely enter, access, interpret, and share sensitive health information with our patients.

  • The Gurriny Yealamucka Health Services Aboriginal Corporation (GYHSAC) is leading this innovation in data technology with a focus on delivering improved health outcomes and culturally safe care for our Indigenous community.

    The project is supported by the Yarrabah Leadership Forum. Funding has been provided by the Federal Department of Health, with contributions from GYHSAC and the Australian National University. The Software Innovation Institute of the ANU has implemented the infrastructure and the software apps.

Downloads

You can now download the demo version of GYHSAC Patient software and try that out. In the following, we list two methods that you can employ to start using the app depending on your platform (Android (recommended) and Web)

Android

A .apk file can be downloaded to your Android device. After downloading simply tap to approve the install of the app. Then find it's new icon and tap it to run the app.
